Introduction
Lord Murugan temple was built in Vayaloor 1200 years ago during the reign of the Cholas. Here the main shine is that of Lord Murugan which is placed behind the Moolavar Shiva Sannithy. The Lord Nataraja (the dancing form of Lord Shiva) idol here with both legs touching the ground, is quite fascinating. It is probably the only temple anywhere to have such a depiction of Lord Nataraja. About 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) west of Trichy, this ancient temple in Vayaloor nestles amid green fields dotted with coconut palms, and dissected by streams. The bucolic setting lends it something of a solitary air. Here Lord Shiva is referred to as Agnishwarar. There is a tank (Sakhti Tirtham) facing the temple, which according to legend, was created by Lord Murugan himself. Once you enter the rajagopuram (spire which serves as an entrance), on your left is the Vanni Maram - an ancient holy tree.
Annual festivals such as Thai Poosam (Jan/Feb), Panguni Uthiram (Mar/Apr), Vaikasi Visakam (May/June), Adi Kirthikai (July/Aug), Thiru Karthikai (Oct/Nov) and Kanda Shasti (Nov), are celebrated here with great pomp and religious fervor. Devotees from across South India come in droves to participate in the festivities, and pay tribute to Lord Murugan.
The shrine is steeped in mythology, and has many interesting folklores associated with it. If you can have a local to show you around the temple complex, nothing like it.
