Introduction
Thiruvanaikaval or Sri Jambukeshwara temple is a popular Lord Shiva shrine, about 2 kilometers (1.25 miles) east of Srirangam island – adjacent to the Ranganathaswamy temple - in Trichy. This beautiful temple complex is composed of five concentric walls and seven architectural gopurams (spires). Built almost 1800 years ago by an early Chola king, the temple is among the five major Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu symbolizing the five elements (Panchabhoota Sthalam). This one, however, represents the element water. Chidambaram (ether), Kalahasti (wind), Tiruvannamalai (fire) and Kanchipuram (earth), are the other ‘Panchabhoota Sthalam’.
Hindu mythology has it that an elephant and spider once worshipped Lord Shiva under a Jambu (guava) tree that grew over a small stream at this site, and since then the shrine began to be called Jambukeshwara. Here the presiding deity is the Shivalingam, half submerged in water from a subterranean spring in the sanctum sanctorum. Jambukeshwara temple is also the abode of Goddess Akilandeshwari, an incarnation of Goddess Parvathi (Lord Shiva’s consort).
You will be intrigued by the length and broadness of the outer wall of the temple, known as Vibudi Prakara. It is over a mile long, about two foot thick and over 25-foot high, and attested with a legend, according to which Lord Shiva along with the laborers worked on building this massive wall. The temple hosts the renowned classical dance festival, Natyanjali every year, which brings together classical dance exponents from across the country.
