Introduction
One of the few churches in the country with louvered doors, St. John’s Church belongs to the early 19th century. It is located near Theppakkulam in the heart of Trichy. Once you step into the church precinct, the din of the city drops absolutely, and you are in an atmosphere of serenity. The interiors of this quaint white structure are made spacious and airy by the louvered doors. Take a look at the ornamental plaques to the departed, most of who have fallen victim to malaria, cholera or enemy bullets. Browse the church cemetery and soak up the quietude; the headstones most of them painted white with grass growing unbridled over them fills you with nostalgia.
The architecture of the church is worth a mention, particularly for the grand pavilions. With the donation raised, the church authority has built the St. John’s School for the under-privileged. St. Xavier’s is another beautiful church close to St. John’s in Vedugarpettai.
