Introduction
You will be treated to some truly exotic shades of green and blue at the Viralimalai Sanctuary, about 30 kilometers (19 miles) from Trichy. Viralimalai is a scenic town at the foothills, home to one of the country’s most beautiful sanctuaries for peacock. First thing first, carrying a camera to this peacock habitat is imperative. At Viralimalai, the peacocks wander about around the Murugan temple and the enclosing woodland. To watch these gorgeous birds break into a jig by spreading out their lush plume, is quite engaging. The variety of peacocks and peahens is enormous here. Keep an eye out; you might spot the rare Palawan peacock pheasant – by far the most vibrantly colored peacock specie – grazing with gay abandon.
Tourists throng the sanctuary between October and April, when these birds come out in full force, making a display of their fantastic plumage. This is because Tamil Nadu receives a summer monsoon and winter monsoon during which the overhead nimbus clouds open up with heavy downpour, exposing a brilliant blue sky. In anticipation of rain, the peacocks spread out their rich tail, and dance to the rumble of thunder. Peacock watching is a different birding experience. Add to it the sylvan setting of Viralimalai which makes it a favorite among weekend holidaymakers.
