Introduction
The Kerala State Science and Technology Museum is located close to the Napier Museum and the Postmaster General’s Office in Trivandrum. A study-cum-recreation centre, the museum displays an array of exhibits on all disciplines of science, technology and electronics. The place gets a lot of students studying science. It serves as a dynamic medium of science communication, with the activities aimed at instilling a scientific temper and awareness among common men. There are dedicated galleries with working/animated and participatory kind of exhibits. It organizes and conducts mobile and temporary science exhibitions and competitions along with science film shows.
You will come across a rare collection of electronic components at the Electronics Engineering Gallery. Here you can learn about the natural form of electricity, its generation, distribution, application and usage with the help of various exhibits. At the Bio-medical Engineering Gallery, you can watch educative medical and bio-medical film shows, and browse the interactive working models of bio-medical equipments along with animation graphics on computers and digital announcement systems. There are interactive models on basic mathematical principles and number spectrum at the Mathematical Puzzle Corner.
The Priyadarshini Planetarium is a part of the Kerala State Science and Technology Museum. One of India’s most sophisticated planetariums, the complex has a centrally air-conditioned sky theatre, conference hall, workshops and a sound-studio. It is rated one of the best horizontal domed planetariums by global standards with a seating capacity of 184 guests. Various science-related shows are played here, the most popular one being “Man and the Universe” which deals with the origin and different stages of development of astronomy, the structure of different planets and the origins of the Universe. At the museum park of the planetarium, you will come across numerous outdoor exhibits including models of rockets and aeroplanes. A 40-minute science-related show is conducted daily at 12 noon in English. Ticket rates for star gazing are: Adults Rs 15, Children (between 3 and 10 years) Rs 10.
