Introduction

Sree Chithra Art Gallery is located adjacent to the Napier Museum, about 2 kilometers (1.25 miles) from the Trivandrum railway station and 6 kilometers (4 miles) from the international airport. Set up in 1935, this art gallery draws connoisseurs from the world over who come here to view the genius of the Indian painters. Browse the gallery for its motley collection of century-old, original world famous paintings by the likes of Raja Ravi Verma, Jamini Roy, the Russian painter-cum-philosopher Nicholas Roerich, KCS Panicker and Svetlova among others. Of course, the highpoint remains the colorful brush strokes of local artist Raja Ravi Verma, detailed to perfection while capturing the mood of his subject. Born and raised in Kilimanoor Palace of Kerala, his oil paintings detail the faintest of shadows, with a special emphasis on the attire of the subject by finely bringing out its pattern and texture. The exquisite works from the Bengal, Rajput, Mughal and Tanjore schools of art in India hold you awe-inspired. Pan the length of the gallery for its unique, intricate paintings from China, Japan, Tibet and Bali among many other parts of the world.

The gallery houses an interesting collection of contemporary paintings by artists from Bengal and Rajasthan among others. Appreciate the ornate Kerala and Mughal miniature paintings in a fusion of colors, and the 400-year-old Tanjavore miniature paintings. These are artistic masterpieces in the true sense of the word. You will also come across some manuscripts of immense archival significance in addition to a rare array of mural paintings and copies of paintings of the Ajanta Caves. Also browse through the antiques belonging to the Travancore royal family. A trip to Sree Chithra Art Gallery is a great way to get a glimpse into the history and cultural heritage of the country, Kerala in particular.
