Introduction
Thiruvallam is a green backwater getaway about 6 kilometers (3.75 miles) from Trivandrum, popular for canoe rides. At the confluence of Killi and Karamana rivers, Thiruvallam opens up a vista of sleepy fishing villages thick with exotic flowers fringing the serene backwaters. The place is also popular for its temple dedicated to Lord Parashurama believed to be the creator of Kerala. A Hindu pilgrimage destination, the Parashurama temple is thronged by devotees to perform rituals in honor of their ancestors.
Away from the bustle of Trivandrum city, the confluence of the two beautiful rivers at Thiruvallam creates an idyllic setting for navigation. Explore in a canoe or houseboat, and soak up the laidback rhythm of life in these tiny fishing hamlets lining the waterway. Watch fishermen wade into the water to make a catch, while women in colorful saris work in the paddy fields or attend to household chores. Mostly they stop whatever they are doing to wave at you! A backwater cruise opens up innumerable photo opportunities. Capture the emerald paddy fields, the thatched homesteads hedging in a little garden, flock of waterfowls, exotic lily and lotus flowers growing thick in some stretches. Feel the breeze in your face, listen to bird songs, the soft swishing of water around the boat…you will feel a complete sense of calm. Take your time to suck in this vibrant backwater scenery.
On this backwater excursion, you can also take a round of the picturesque Veli Lagoon separated by a narrow sandbar from the Arabian Sea. This sandbar is the Veli Tourist Village, about 8 kilometers (5 miles) from Trivandrum, with a waterfront park, floating bridge and great water sports facility. Not to mention, the Akulam Boat Club is another attraction for water sports enthusiasts near Thiruvallam offering delightful boat cruises on Akulam Lake.
