Introduction
Bagore ki Haveli is a beautiful mansion on the waterfront of Lake Pichola at Gangaur Ghat. Built in 1751 by the then Prime Minister of Mewar, Amirchand Badwa, this elegant haveli has now been converted into a museum of traditional puppetry, and holds musical performances every evening. There are some hundred rooms in the haveli with terraces, corridors, courtyards and balconies, but only a few display ethnic costumes and modern art. Browse the Queen’s Chamber and appreciate the quintessential Mewar paintings, in addition to the two peacocks made of small pieces of colored glass. The property was taken over by the Mewar State after the death of Badwa. It then came to be occupied by Maharana Shakti Singh of Bagore who erected the palace of three arches in 1878, and thus christened it ‘Bagore ki Haveli’.
Browse the haveli and admire its intricate carvings, glasswork, objects of daily use such as hookahs, nutcrackers, jewelry boxes, rose water sprinklers, hand fans, pan boxes, copper utensils, dice games and more. Add to it the architectural splendor of the mansion, which makes an evening of cultural performances all the more atmospheric. Not to mention the beautiful lighting in evenings. After the death of the rulers, the mansion lay in neglect until 1986 when the West Zone Cultural Centre took over the task of restoring it, leading to the construction of the museum.
Before leaving, take a stroll in the haveli and see the opulent private chambers of the royal ladies, their bathrooms, dressing rooms, bedrooms, living rooms, worship rooms and recreation rooms. A tour of Bagore ki Haveli is a great way to get a glimpse into the traditional architecture and the way of life of the royal family.
