Introduction
On the road to Ranakpur and Mount Abu, you will pass a beautiful, old-world square, Sukhadia Circle, in Udaipur’s northern suburb of Panchwati. It is in fact a large roundabout with a 21-meter-high (70 feet), three-tiered fountain in the centre, and scalloped dishes surmounted by a wheatear motif symbolizing prosperity. There is a beautiful pond encircling the fountain and lush gardens in the vicinity. A popular landmark in Udaipur, Sukhadia Circle was built in 1968 and was opened to public only in 1970.
Beautifully illuminated in evenings, you will see flocks of families, friends and children simply relaxing in the lawns or strolling around the fountain. A favorite meeting place of the locals, the evenings get busier with music playing in the background, and hoards of snack and tea stalls invading the gardens. Enjoy a paddle boat ride on the small moat if you must, or try the mini-train nearby. Somehow kids love to float toy boats in the central pond where the duck-shaped paddle boats jostle for space.
The circle commemorates Rajasthan’s former Chief Minister Mohan Lal Sukhadia, a native of Udaipur. You can take some time out in the evening on your Udaipur tour and visit this beautiful square - its exuberance combined with a quaint charm makes it a nice place to wrap up your day.
