Khajuraho, a town in the state of Madhya Pradesh, is primarily known for the 'Group of Monuments' located there. The town is a small settlement with a population of less than 20,000 people. The monuments in the town, mainly Hindu and Jain Temples, are far-famed for the erotic sculptures they showcase. Khajuraho Temples depict a high level of finesse in carving and are believed to be constructed around 11th century.
The Khajuraho Temples point out the architectural excellence of the Chandela Dynasty. Not only this group of temples is recognised as the UNESCO World Heritage Site, but it is also considered to be one of the 'Seven Wonders of India'. The beautiful shrines are very significant for Hindu and Jain religions; at the same time, the erotic carvings that adorn the temples are equally alluring. It is said that there were 80 temples in Khajuraho during medieval period, of which not more than 25 remain today.
All the temples in Khajuraho have been grouped under three divisions namely western, eastern and southern. Various beautiful temples like the Adinath Temple, Chitragupta Temple, Devi Jagdamba Temple and Lakshmana Temple display elegant architecture. Among other prominent monuments in Khajuraho, Ajaigarh Fort is a must see. The Fort, which was built for defence purposes, foresees the beautiful Ken river. Another important fort to cover, while on a Khajuraho tour, is the Kalinjar Fort, which has a collection of awe-inspiring structures. Khajuraho sightseeing tour, more than a vacation, is an uncommon experience which leaves a deep impact on the minds of the visitors.
