  • Great views, No fridge!!

    by Dale56 on June 21, 2016

The Kankarwa Haveli is in a great location for exploring beautiful Udaipur, and the view from the bay window was magic. The staff were attentive, the air-con worked beautifully (it was about 45 on the days we were there!) breakfast on the roof was pleasant and the ensuite was perfect....but not having a small fridge tucked somewhere in the room was disappointing as it was impossible to keep a drink cold and when it's that hot you need a cold drink!

  • Loved it

by PortisheadTraveller on April 20, 2016

The location was close to every thing. I was able to walk out of the door and straight into the streets/shops a ndnot far from the city palace. As a solo traveler I really appreciated the comfort and sense of security at this hotel. The roof top restaurant has an amazing view of the lake. My room was on the ground floor looking out towards the lake and really pretty and very comfortable. I would certainly recommend it to anyone.

  • Unfulfilled Potential

by WILawyer on April 18, 2016

This place could be very nice. It is not. Like many hotels in Udaipur, this property was converted to a hotel. Ordinarily, I like that. However, this was poorly done. In our room, which had a nice lake view, the room originally had some beautiful woodwork. In renovating, they decided to paint over the wood. Not a great choice, but could be okay, except they only painted some of it. Again, it is not that some boards are painted and others not. Single boards were partially painted. The painting was sloppy. Our room lacked any sort of beauty. The mattress was thin and uncomfortable. The towels were old, dingy and discolored. The shower was not great. The breakfast was very poor. Limited choices. Juice boxes rather than glasses of juice. Poor internet connectivity. We had a private balcony, with a nice view. However, it could have used cleaning and updating. In fact, the whole place was rather rundown. We stayed as part of a package of hotels (some of which were very nice), so I have no idea of the cost of this place. However, it reminded me of the cheap hotels in which I would stay when traveling in college. The location is good, and the people were very nice. Other than that, this place had very little to recommend it.

  • Charming haveli, quirky and full of character

by RichardJohnC on April 11, 2016

Our three nights here were wonderful. We stayed in several 5 star properties during our two week holiday but this proved one of our favourites and offers a truly memorable experience. The location is superb and offers fantastic views and the roof top terrace a great place to relax and to have breakfast or lunch. Our room was comfortable and elegant with plenty of traditional touches, although the bathroom was pretty basic and would benefit from a refurb (and new towels). The hotel team make you feel very much part of the family (including as we celebrated Holi together) and the whole atmosphere is laid back and relaxing. If anything the boys working in the hotel, although well meaning and friendly, are just a little too laid back - the property would benefit from a more professional approach to service and dining, although I accept that this is all part of its charm! A final and minor point, the small cartons of juice served at breakfast is not proper orange juice but an artificial Tropicana orange drink, a real shame. Fresh juice would have been nice.

  • My favourite hotel and location in India

    by Patrick P on April 9, 2016

I now live in India but visited the country 20 times before moving here. I have visited Udaipur on numerous occasions over the past 15 years and I have always stayed at the Kankarwa. I first found it via a rough guide and loved its old world charm. However, the welcome I always receive from the owner and his family, coupled with the relaxed atmosphere is why I return year after year. I have already stayed twice this year and three times in 2015. Some other reviews are correct when they say you have to be a touch athletic because the rooftop restaurant is quite a climb. However, there are few places to eat in the lake area that don't involve a similar stair assault. You also have to keep a close eye of small children because some of the rails and barriers are low. Thus, 'not family friendly' is a bit off the mark, just don't take an over indulged, out of control child. The rooms are quite stunning, but don't expect a TV or coffee making facilities. It's not the Kankarwa style and good say I. It is beautiful inside and out and a credit to Janardan the owner. I LOVE THE KANKARWA!

  • Our room on the top of the haveli facing the lake was a superb location
