Agra has a rich historical background the earliest reference for Agra comes from the epical age, when Mahabharata refer Agra as Agravana. Emperor Akbar built the Agra fort and Fatehpur Sikri near Agra. It is said that the city was left abandoned in clueless circumstances after remaining as the capital for around fifteen years.
Agra came to the global notice when Mughal Empire Shahjahan ascended to the throne and built the world famous Taj Mahal in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Later Shahjahan shifted his capital to Shahjahanabad in Delhi and ruled from there. However he was dethroned in 1658 by his son Aurangzeb and imprisoned him in Agra Fort. Finally many regional kingdoms emerged after the death of Aurangzeb.
Although several rulers ruled Agra from time to time it was Mughal rulers who left ineffaceable mark on this city.

Taj Mahal

Fatehpur Sikri
Fatehpur Sikri is located 37 kms from Agra. The city built primarily in Red Sandstone was built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar. Akbar made this city as his capital but later on he abandoned it because of scarcity of water. Fatehpur Sikri was built during 1571 and 1585. However, there is a mosque within the complex which is built in lines of the mosque in Mecca. Entrance to the mosque is through Buland Darwaza.
Itmad-Ud-Daulah's Tomb
Itmad-ud daulah is one of the most striking of Mughal tombs. The tomb contains cenotaphs of Mirza Ghiyas and Asmat Begum, the parents of the powerful Mughal Empress Nurjahan queen of Jahangir. Itmad-ud-Daulah's tomb is a highly decorated edifice which witnesses innumerable tourists every year from several parts of the country.

By Air: Agra airport is situated at a distance of just 7 km. from the city centre. Many domestic airlines operate flights from all major cities of India. It takes just 40 minutes to reach Agra from Delhi.
By Rail: Trains are available regularly which connect Agra to Delhi and other major Indian cities. The Shatabdi Express, Rajdhani Express, and Taj Express connect Agra with Delhi.
By Road:The Idgah bus stand connects Agra to the neighboring cities of Delhi, Jaipur, Mathura etc.
