    Located about 90 miles south-east of New Delhi is Aligarh. A city in Aligarh District in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Usually referred to as Koil or Kol, Aligarh is well know for Aligarh Muslim University. The present Aligarh district was formed in 1804 after the British occupation of Aligarh in September 1803. Aligarh is in fact the name of a nearby fort which is three kilometers north of the town.

    The origin of the name of Kol is unclear. In some ancient texts, Kol has been referred to as the name of a Caste, name of a place or mountain and name of a sage or demon. With a total area of 3700.4 Sq. kilometers Aligarh has a population of 667,732. The district lies on the plains of river Ganges and Yamuna.
