Nested midst between clusters of small hills of the Aravalli range, Alwar is referred as the gateway to the historic and the most vibrant city of Rajsthan. The city traces it origin back back to the kingdoms of Viratnagar that flourished here around 1500 B.C. Also known as, Matasya Desh, Alwar was the site where the Pandavas spent the last year of their exile. Alwar is said to have been founded by a member of the royal kachh family of Amber however, the control passed in to the hands of Kachhwahas of Nikumbhas. The charming city is dotted with innumerable forts and palaces of the region, the tranquil lakes, stately hunting lodges, and sites of archeological importance. It has one of the finest wild life sanctuaries in Rajasthan-Sarika, which is an excellent tiger reserve.

Alwar Govt Museum
Situated in the old city palace, Alwar government Museum houses a unique collection of arms, bidri work, lacquered and ivory work, musical instruments, stuffed animals, beautiful brass and pottery works from Jaipur, Multan, Bengal and Ceylon, miniature paintings and Persian and Sanskrit manuscripts.
Moosi Maharani ki Chattri
This exquisite cenotaph was constructed by Vijay Singh in the honour of Bhaktawer Singh and his consort, Rani Moosi who immolated herself on the pyre of her husband. The Cenotaph is lavishly ornamented with floral motifs.
Vijay Mandir Palace
The magnificent Vijay Mandir Palace was built by the Maharaja Jai Singh in 1918. Overlooking a serene lake, the palace is surrounded by the sprawling gardens. It has exquisitely furnished rooms and an elegant Sita Ram temple.
Bhartrihari Temple
Located in the heart of the city, it is one of the most popular temples of Alwar. The temple is named after a sage Bhartrihari who once ruled the kingdom of Ujjain. According to folklore, he left his kingdom and wandered this region in panance for his suspicions against his younger brother Vikramaditya (renowned king of Malwa).
It is believed that he had miraculous powers for healing and curing. Devotees from all around the world throng to Alwar to find solution for their problems and get permanent cure from severe diseases. Every year in the months of September/October is organized in the memory of Bhartrihari Baba.
The tomb of Fateh Singh
The spectacular tomb of Fateh Singh is the local landmark of Alwar. Fateh Jung was a minister of Mughal emperor shah and related to Khanzada rulers of Alwar. It is crowned with a massive domb, which is a fascinating blend of Hindu and Mughal architectural styles.
MBala Quila
Dominating the blue sky of Alwar is the invincible Bala Quila that is built at a height of about 300m above the city. It is believed to have been constructed in the early 16th century by Hasan Khan Mewati. It passed from the Mughals, to the Marathas, to the Jats, till it was finally captured by the Kachhwaha Rajputs. The fort has six entrances, which are, Chand Pol, Suraj Pal (named after Raja Suraj Mal of Bharatpur), Jai Pl, Kishan Pol, Andheri Gae and Laxman Pol.
