Amritsar, literally meaning the tank of nectar, is a city of utmost religious and historical importance. In the late sixteenth century, Guru Ramdas, the fourth Guru of the Sikhs founded Amritsar which today has become one of the most prominent and sought after destination for the world tourists. He built a gorgeous temple on the spot, in the middle of the sacred tank, where the famous Golden Temple stands today. The fabulous Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh- the mecca of freedom-lovers, Hari Mandir and the Durgiana Mandir, Tarn Taran and many more are the reason for the influx of escalating number of tourists from the nook and corners of the country to the city.

Amritsar derives its name from Amrit Sarovar, the holy tank that surrounds the fabulous Golden Temple. Amritsar might be a meager town in the northern part of India, but the city has got a high stature hallowed by the presence of revered Golden Temple. The temple complex being in the heart of India is encircled by a maze of narrow lanes wherein lies the busiest markets in India. But the golden temple dazzles in its own light that arrests attention of millions to bow down.

It’s not only Sikhs who pay homage to the sacred temple; people of other religious faiths equally revere the temple of Harmandir Sahib. Jallianwala Bagh, site of the dreadful massacre of vulnerable Indians by British troops is a must see. Indo-Pakistan border crossing at Wagah, just a short distance from Amritsar is another place of interest for tourists. If you are 'doing' north India, you should not miss visiting a city like Amritsar. It's easy to travel there from Delhi by road and by rail.
