Named after the headquarters town of Balangir, the city of Balangir was also the headquarters of majestic state of Patna since the eighties of the nineteenth century.
The brother of Narasimha Deo, Balaram Deo, the twelfth Raja of Patna established Balangir. The name Balangir has been derived from the word Balaramgarh taken from the name of the founder Balaram Deo. The district is hemmed in the northeast by the rock-infested Mahanadi and in the northwest by Gandhamardan hill. Several hill streams cross through it. The city is called the land of Tantrik culture. Ne of the oldest and largest college called Rajendra college which is also famous for introducing commerce in Orissa for the first time. PR High School is also there which is the oldest school over there, which is over 100 years old. The city has seven beautiful lakes and two nice parks.
