Bounded by Udaipur and Chittorgarh, Banswara district is the native place of the third largest tribe of India, Bhils. Banswara derives its name either from the Hindi word for Bamboo (Bans) which once grew here in great abundance or from the Bhil chieftain named Bansna who was killed by Maharawal Jagmal Singh in the battle over the possession of the region. Impressed with the bravery and the generosity of Bansna, Jagmal named the region after him. Banswara is popularly referred as the “City of Hundred Islands” due to the innumerable tiny islands that river Mahi makes near the district. Banswara is known for its rich flora and fauna. The verdurous slopes of Aravalli hills are covered with Mango, Khajur and Mahua and teak forests and are home to many wild animals and birds including squirrels, lizards, snakes, chinkara, Ronj and four horned antelope, black drongo, gray shrike, green bee-eater, parrot, jungle crow, woodpecker and common myna. Grey jungle fowl, red spire fowl and grey partridge. The deep jungles of Banswara are also inhabited by panther, which are rarely seen.
