Barmer derives its name from the ruler Bahada Rao or Bar Rao who founded the town in the 13th century. Famous for its rich crafts, dances and music, Barmer is considered the center of woodcarving, pottery, carpets and other intricate embroidery work.

Situated on a rocky hillock, Juna Barmer is famous for a temple dedicated to Balark (the Sun). The place also houses three Jain temples, an inscription of 1295 AD and a huge pillar in the hall of the largest temple of Maharaja Kula Sri Samanta Sinha Dev.
