Locally referred as “the eastern gateway to Rajasthan”, Bharatpur is known for its Keolaodeo Bird Sanctuary, which is the finest in Asia with a rich avian variety. The city was founded by the famous Jat ruler Maharaja Suraj Mal (adopted son of Badan Singh) in 1733 AD. He captured the fort of Bharatpur from Khemkaran, the rival chief, whom he killed and thus laid the foundation of Bharatpur City. Once a well-fortified city, Bahratpur was sliced out of the region formerly known as Mewat. According to a legend, Bharatpur is named after Bharat, the younger brother of lord Rama of Ayodhya whose other brother Laxman is the family deity of the erstwhile royal family of Bharatpur. His name Laxman was also engraved on the arms, seals and other emblems of the state. Marvelous Bharatpur Palace, invincible fort and many such historical edifices still recount the interesting stories of the royal past of Bharatpur.
