    Nestling in the foothills of Himalayas, Corbett National Park extends over an area of 520.83sq.km. Replete with variety of fauna and flora, Corbett National Park is famous for the variety of tigers, elephants and leopards. This dense deciduous forest is a haven for 50 mammals, 580 kinds of birds and 25 reptiles besides having the highest density of tigers in the country. Corbett national park was established in 1936. It is the India's first national park and the first sanctuary to come under Project Tiger. However, there is a wide variety of vegetation in Corbett National Park and the environment is congenial for the survival of several types of fauna and flora. Jim Corbett National Park India had the distinction of being chosen as the venue for the inauguration of Project Tiger in India.

    Originally Corbett was called the Hailey National Parks Act after the Governor of the united provinces Sir Malcom Hailey. After Independence it was renamed the Ramganga National Park and then to Corbett National Park in commemoration of Jim Corbett and in recognition of his services determining the location and limits of the proposed national park. Jim Corbett, the hunter of man-eating tigers was a great conservationist, author and photographer. He was born in Nainital of English and Irish parentage. He sustained a close communion with nature since childhood and this how he turned to be one of the famous conservationists.

    Best time to visit -The best visiting season of Corbett is from November 15 to June 15. Corbett remains closed between June 16 and November 14, when the monsoons flood the river beds and cut the fragile road links.

    Project Tiger
    On April 1, 1973, Project Tiger was inaugurated here in Corbett National Park. The project was initiated merely to save and revive the alarming decline of Indian tiger- panthera tigris by setting selected reserves of adequate area where tigers along with other flora would be conserved. In 1973 there were 8 such reserves under the project, and the Corbett Tiger Reserve was the first of these.

     By Air:Phoolbagh, Pantnagar at a distance of 50-kms is the nearest airport. Delhi at a distance of 300-kms is the nearest international airport.

    By Rail:Ramnagar is on the broad gauge track from where the road transport options have to be availed to reach the park.

    By Road:Dhikala is 300-kms from Delhi, 145-kms from Lucknow and 51-kms from Ramnagar. The route from Delhi spans Hapur-Murababad-Ramnagar.
