    Dashnok is a small village near Nokha in Bikaner district. This sacred place was formed by taking the corner land of ten nearby villages. Deshnok is home to the famous Karni Mata temple. It is one of the revered temples of India. The temple is dedicated to Karni Mata who is believed to be the reincarnation of the goddess Durga. Born to a Charan, Karni devoted her life to the service of the poor. She was patronized by the Rathore rulers of Bikaner and prophesied a great glory for Bika, the founder of Bikaner. Kani Mata temple is the only temple in India where rats are worshipped and fed by devotees. The temple houses innumerable brown rats (locally known as Kabas), which scurry around the complex without any fear. Legend goes that Karni Mata once tried to bring back to life a child of a storyteller but she failed as the god of death had already reincarnated him in human form. Inflamed by the failure, Karni Mata announced that after death, everyone from her tribe (charan) would temporarily inhabit the body of a rat before being reborn into the tribe. Therefore, these rats are believed to house the souls of Karni Mata's departed devotees. It is said that if you spot a white rat, you will have good luck. People form all over the country pay a holy visit to Shri karni Mata temple during Navratras. Dashnok also comes alive at the time of Karni Mata Fair that is celebrated twice a year.

    Karni Mata Temple
    This magnificent temple was erected by Maharaja Ganga Singh in the early twentieth century. It is dedicated to Karni Mata who is believed to be the reincarnation of goddess Durga. Also known as Madh, the temple encloses a beautiful image of Karni Mata adorned with a crown (mukut) and garlands. The huge silver gates and the exquisite marble carvings were donated by Maharaja Ganga Singh. Devotees from far and wide throng to Deshnok to attend the annual Karni Mata Fair and held twice in a year. The temple is home to a large number of brown rats that are considered auspicious. According to the belief, these rats are the repositories of the souls of dead charans, the traditional bards.

    Sri Nehri Ji
    It is the name of the tree, below which Karni Mata used to meditate. Situated about 2 km from Deshnok, this evergreen tree is believed to be 591 years old. Legend goes that Mata had stuck a stick on the ground and sprinkled some curd on it. The same stick turned out to be a huge tree, which is worshipped till now. A statue of Karni Mata is also installed below this tree.

    How to get there

    By Air: Bikaner is the nearest airport. Deshnok is about 30 miles south of Bikaner. Local taxis can be hired from the airport.

    By Rail: The nearest railhead is at Bikaner. It is well connected with Delhi, Jodhpur, Jaipur, Bhatinda, Kalka and Howrah ( Kolkata).
