Nestled in the foothills of the great Aravallis, Durgarpur was founded in 13th century by Rawal Veer Singh who took over this part of the state from Bhil Chieftain Dungaria. Popularly known as the City of Hills, it is named after the capital of the former princely state of Dungarpur.

Places of Interest
Juna Mahal
Juna Mahal is a seven-storied palace, built in stages between 13th and 18th centuries. The interiors of the palace are donned with miniature paintings, impressive mirror work, glass inlays, and old frescoes. Crenulated walls, towers, narrow access ways and passages were built in this fortress to impede the enemy forces. It is still the current residence of the royal family of Dungarpur.
Udai Bilas Palace
Set amidst the sparkling blue waters of Gaibsagar Lake, Udai Bilas Palace is an ideal example of the typical Rajput architectural style. The palace has intricately sculptured pillars and panels, ornate balconies, bracketed windows, and impressive balustrades and marvelous arches. The palace is named after its owner, Maha Rawal Udai Singh II, Udai Bilas who was the great patron of art and architecture.
Vijay Raj Rajeshwar Temple
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Vijay Raj Rajeshwar Temple is an architectural marvel and a fine example of artisanship of the shilpis of Dungarpur.
Government Archeological Museum
Officially known as Rajmata Devendra Kunwar State Museum and Cultural Centre, the museum houses a huge gallery with a wonderful collection from 6th-7th century, 11th-12th century and 16th-18th century excavations of the Vagad region. Some of the remarkable sculptors displayed in the museum are Mahisasur Mardini (16th-17th century); Vinadhar Shiva in black stone (6th-7th century); Kumari, a female figure (6th-7th century) all discovered from Aamjhara, a beautiful idol of Gajlaxmi (17th-18th century) and the Navgraha in a single stone piece (11th-12th century). The royal family of Dungarpur also gifted many of their personal collections and antiquities.
Gaib Sagar Lake
Overlooking the woody hills of Dungarpur is the serene Gaib Sagar Lake. Habitat to thousands of ducks, egrets, white breasted water hens, bee-eaters, green pigeons, grey and purple herons and moorhens, it is a great place to observe birdlife. Also, situated along the lake is the famous Shrinathji temple. The temple complex houses several exquisitely built shrines with one being the main temple.
