Located within a fertile and irrigated agricultural area Jalgaon lies in the northern part of Maharastra on the northern Deccan Plateau. Jalgaon of western India is a prominent collection and distribution center of agricultural goods. The area comprises volcanic soil and is appropriate for cotton production. The dominating products of the region include raw cotton. However, Jalgaon is a prime center of cotton-textile and vegetable oil mills, particularly groundnut-oil and hydrogenation plants. Several major rail lines serve the city and is well connected by national highway to Mumbai and Kolkata. Jalgaon got to be part of British India in 1818 and independent India in 1947. Earlier Jalgaon was a part of territory governed by the Holkar family of Maratha rulers.
