Founded in 14th century by Feroz Shah Tuglaq in the memory of his cousin Sultan Mohammad whose real name was Jauna.Jaunpur nestles in southern part of Uttar Pradesh. Jaunpur's history dates back to 1388 Sultan of Delhi Feroz Shah Tughlaq appointed Malik Sarwar as governor of the region. Later Malik Sarwar declared independence as sultanate was weakened by the sacking of Delhi by Mongols and Timor and he and his son founded Sharqi dynasty. During that time Jaunpur was centre of center of Urdu and Sufi knowledge culture. Sharqi dynasty was famous for maintaining good relations between Muslim and Hindus. Jaunpur's independence came to an end in 1480, as the city was conquered by Sikander Lodi, the Sultan of Delhi. The Sharqi kings attempted for several years to retake the city, but failed.

Prime attraction
Atala Masjid Started in 1377 and completed in 1408 in the reign of Ibrahim Sharquie. This mosque shows off the earliest and best example of Sharquie architecture. The facade of its prayer-hall composed of three large ornamental archways is really eye-catching.
Jami Masjid This is the largest Jama Masjid of Jaunpur built by Hussain Shah in 1458-78. The mosque is a larger version of Atala Mosque in design and plan. The impressive structure, raised on a high plinth, encloses a courtyard 66 mtr by 64.5 mtr.
Lal Darwaza Masjid Constructed in around 1450 by the queen of Sultan Mahmud Shah Bibi Raji Lal Darwaja Masjid is a visit worthy place.
Khalis Mukhlis Masjid This was constructed by Malik Mukhlis and Khalis in 1417.
Shahi Bridge Constructed by Munim Khan in 1568 this picturesque old bridge spans the Gomti river.
Shitla Choukiya Dham This famous, ancient temple of Jaunpur is dedicated to Shitla Mata.
Yamdagni Ashram A religious centre, this ashram is closely associated with the life of sage Parashuram.
