The former princely state of Jhalawar lies in the southeastern region of Rajasthan at the edge of the great Malwa plateau. Created in 1838 A.D, it was separated from Kota by erstwhile Britishers. Jhalawar gets its name from Jhalas, the Jhala clan of Rajputs, also the rulers of Jhalawar. Popularly known as Patan or Jhalrapatan, it is blessed with rocky but water-laden lush green landscape, unlike much of Rajasthan. Various rulers including Zalim Singh 1 made a significant contribution in making it a culturally rich state. The red poppy fields and the orange laden orchards make the verdant countryside of Jhalawar lively and colourful during winters. The region contributes a major share to the production of citrus fruits in the country.
