Watched over by an invincible fort, Jodhpur is the second largest city of Rajasthan. It is located on the eastern fringe of the golden Thar Desert. Once the capital of Marwar state, this princely city was founded by Rao Jodha, a chief of the Rathore clan, in 1459 who claimed to be descendants of lord Rama. Jodhpur is popularly referred as the Blue City as most of the houses around the Mehrangarh Fort are painted with blue color. The blue wash was originally applied on the houses of Brahmins but soon non-Brahmins also started painting their houses with the same color as it was said to deflect the heat and keep mosquitoes away. Embellished with beautiful forts, royal palaces, exquisite cenotaphs and countless age-old temples, Jodhpur is great place to experience the true essence of Rajasthan.
