The princely state of Kishangarh sets midst the heart of Rajasthan. Once ruled by mighty Rathores, Kishangarh took its name from Kishan Singh, the erstwhile prince of Jodhpur who conquered it and got it recognized by the Mughal Emperor Jahangir in 1611 AD. Flanked by the powerful kingdoms of Marwar, Amber and Mewar, Kishangarh was initially a loyal state of the Mughals and later of the British empires. It was Kumbhalgarh only where one of the finest schools of miniature paintings flourished in the 18th century. The most celebrated Bani Thani style of painting peaked under the patronage of Raja Sawant Singh in Kishangarh. Today, the town has carved out a special place for itself with its remarkable artwork and handicrafts. Kumbhalgarh also has the distinction of being the largest marble and granite-cutting center in India.
