Ludhiana stands on the Grand Trunk Road from Delhi to Amritsar. The history of Ludhiana can be traced back to 1481 when it was just a small village called Meer Hota. Ludhiana was initially ruled by yodhas from the 1st to the 4th century, and subsequently came under King Samudragupta and the Rajputs. In 9th century the original Ludhianavis actually settled here and then came the Punjabi races of Sidhus, Gills, Sandhus and Grewals from the jungle of Jagraon. However, Ludhiana was under the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the early 19th century for a short period and became an important British cantonment before they took it over in 1809. The British got stationed in Ludhiana and confined Maharaja’s control on the right bank of the river Sutlej.

Ludhiana is well-known the world over for its hosiery goods. It is an important pilgrimage centre as there are many historic Gurdwaras. Hero Bicycles, the world's largest manufacturer of bicycles is based at Ludhiana.

Ludhiana, earlier known as Mir Hota, was founded in the time of Lodhi dynasty which ruled in Delhi from 1451-1526 A.D. Legend says Sikander Lodhi deputed two Lodhi Chief Yusaf Khan and Nihand Khan to restore order in this region. They camped at the site of present Ludhiana. Ludhian came from Ludhi-ana, which means the town of Lodi’s. The name later changed to Ludhiana.
