    Pench National Park is situated in the southern boundary of Madhya Pradesh, bordering Maharashtra, in the districts of Seoni and Chhindwara. The park derives its name from the river Pench that flows through the center of the reserve. In 1977, a 450 sq mile area was declared a wildlife sanctuary whereas a smaller area with in was raised to the status of Pench National Park. The entire area was established as the 19th Tiger Reserve by the government of India in 1197. Later, the sanctuary was renamed as Mowgli Pench Sanctuary and the national park came to be known as Indira Priyadarshini Pench National Park.

    Famed for its beautiful natural scenery, Pench finds mention in the famous book “Aine Akbari” and several natural history books like R. A. Strendale's 'Seonee - Camp life in Satpura Hills,' Forsyth's 'Highlands of Central India' and Dunbar Brander's 'Wild Animals of Central India'. Rudyard Kipling set his most famous work “The Jungle Book “in Pench Tiger Reserve and the villages of Seoni district.

    The hilly landscape of Pench National Park is covered with lush green forests comprising of teak, dazzling white Kulu, Bamboos, Saja (Terminalia tomentosa), Bija (Pterocarpus marsupium), Lendia, Haldu, Dhaora, Aonla, Amaltas and many rare species of shrubs, trees, climbers and medicinal herbs.

    The park has always been rich in wild life. The area is especially known for tigers that are present in a good numbers. Other rare wild animals found here are leopards, wild dogs, sloth bears, porcupines, jungle cats, foxes, striped hyenas, gaurs, chowsinghas and barking deers. Cheetal, Sambar, Neelgai, Wild boar and Jackal can be commonly seen on the banks of rivers and reservoir.

    Apart from Mammals and wildlife, Pench boasts of more than 285 species of resident and migratory birds including Peafowl, Red jungle fowl, Crow pheasant, Crimson breasted barbet, Redvented bulbul, Racket tailed drongo, Magpie robin and lesser whistling teal. In winter, thousands of migratory waterfowl, Brahmini Duck, Pochards, Barheaded Geese and Coots make Pench their home. The endangered species of vultures white-rumped, longbilled, white scavenger and king vulture can also be spotted here. Pench Tiger Reserve is counted amongst the best place for bird watching.
