Set betwixt the Thar Desert region of the Jaiselmer district, Pokhran is surrounded by five lofty salt rocks. Pokhran means “the place of five mirages”. This barren piece of land is famous as a place where India conducted its series of nuclear tests. Ironically code-named ‘The Buddha Smiles’, Pokhran came in to limelight with the first nuclear test conducted here on 18 May 1974. Pokhran has some interesting mythological legends related to it. It is believed that Lord Rama once fitted his bow with a powerful arrow, which gave out immense heat in order to dry up the seas of Sri Lanka. Instead of hitting it in to the sea, he fired the bow into the mythical river Saraswati that used to flow here. Consequently, the river dried up and was replaced by the barren desert. Pokhran is dotted with countless Maheshwari havelis, amazing cenotaphs and many unknown historical monuments that reminds of the lavish lifestyle of royal families of Pokhran
