Sandwiched between Jodhpur and Udaipur, in a valley on the western side of the great Aravalli range, Ranakpur village is one of the five venerated places of the Jain community in the country. It is renowned for its beautifully carved marble temples that date back to the 15th century. The temples were created during the reign of the liberal Rana Kumbha, the then ruler of Mewar. Dharna Shah, a Jain businessman approached to Rana Kumbha to explain his vision of constructing this great temples and demanded land for their construction. The colossal basement of the temple complex covers an area of 48,000 sq. feet. There are four subsidiary shrines, twenty-four pillared halls and enormous domes supported by more than 1444 columns. Each column is sliced out from a single piece of marble and is lavishly adorned with most elaborate sculptors and filigree. One of the most striking features of the temples is the brilliant effect of shadows, light and colors. As the light creeps through the temples over the day, the glittering marble columns change its color from white to gold to bluish. The artistically carved nymphs playing the flute in various dance postures at a height of 45 feet affords an enthralling sight. The entire temple complex reverberates with the soothing sound of two big bells hanged in the assembly hall. Overwhelmed by the beauty of the temples, Great Mughal Emperor, Akbar inscribed one of the columns that say, “no one ever would be allowed to destroy this jewel of architecture”.
