Chungthang
It is a small town located at the confluence of river Lachen and Lachung Chu, both tributaries of the river Teesta. Legend goes that Sikh saint; Guru Nanak Dev had visited the town. His footprint is there on a rock where he once rested. Enthralled by the beauty of this place, Guru Nanak Dev named it as Chungthang in Punjabi, which means Nice Place. It also houses a Gurudwara where he left his walking stick set in ground, which has now grown up in to a full tree. The town is blessed with amazing flora and fauna. During summers, the forests blossoms with an incredible variety of orchids and other ornamental plants.
Lachung Monastery
Lachung meaning “a small mountain” is situated at a distance of 125km from Gangtok. Described as the most picturesque village of Sikkim by a British explorer, Joseph Dalton Hooker, Lachung is famous for its magnificent Monastery. Located on the slopes of lush green meadows, it remains the epicenter of all the religious functions of the local inhabitants.
Kangchendonga National Park
Kangchendonga National Park is situated on the Sikkim and Nepal border came in to existence on August 26, 1977 as part of Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve. Encompassing an area over 850 sq. km, it is counted amongst the high altitude ecosystems in the world. It is endowed with valleys of lush green forests, tumbling tributary streams, flower filled fields, snowy mountains and galaxy of magnificent fauna of rare varieties. The park is named as the paradise of prized Musk Deer, endangered Snow Leopard and the shy Himalayan Tahr, the Shapi of Sikkim. March to May and September to November are the best months for visiting the park. To enter the National Park and Sanctuaries, permission of the State Chief forest officer is required, which can be obtained on payment of a nominal entry fees.
How to get there
By Air: The nearest airport is at Bagdogra in Assam, which is 124km away from Yamthung. Regular lfights fly back and forth from Bagdogra to Kolkata, Delhi and Guwahati. Helicopter service is also available from Bagdogra to Gangtok.
By Rail: The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri, which is 15km from Gangtok. From there you can travel to Yamthung by hiring metered taxis.
By Road: Gangtok is well linked with all major regions of Sikkim and nearby states. A picturesque road running along the river Teesta connects gangtok with Yamthung (140km).
