About Thai Airways

Thai Airways Logo

Thai Airways International Public Company Limited (THAI) was formed in 1960 as an international flag carrier of Thailand by a joint venture of Thai Airways and Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS). However, in 1977 it became a wholly Thai Air company when the government took up the SAS share. In 1988, the domestic operations under the Thai Airways were merged with Thai Airways International to form a single carrier for the country. It also holds 49% stake in the low cost carrier, Nok Air.

Headquartered in Bangkok, its main operational center is the Suvarnbhumi airport. Beginning with the international flights to 9 Asian destinations in 1960, it took to serving the intercontinental destinations from 1971 when international flight booking for Australia was initiated. It began serving Europe in 1972 and North America in 1980. THAI is the founding member of the Star Alliance. It has been the proud recipient of many awards including the Skytrax awards for the World’s Best Cabin Staff and for being the Best Airline in the World, both in the year 2006. In 2009, its Suvarnbhumi airport lounge was awarded the Best First Class Lounge in the World by Skytrax. WHO recognized its measures for promoting in-flight hygiene.
