Avignon

Avignon is an industrial city in southeastern France which is known for its contribution to arts. Set on the Rhone River, the city was selected for "European City of Culture" in 2000. Home to scores of museums, the city was the seat of several anti-popes. Avignon is among the three major cities of Provence along with Arles and Marseille. Pope Clement V made Avignon the new centre of Christianity and settled over there. The colossal Palais des Popes, which resembles a medieval fortress-castle, is still a center of tourists.

Place du Palais- This is a landmark, dating back to the 12th century, church features an imposing gilded statue of the Virgin Mary on its tower. The Church also houses tombs of Benedict XII and Pope John XXII. It's a wonderful place to get into and imbibe its grandeur.

Rue de la République-Well-known as one of the country's most important monasteries, this complex of buildings dates back to 1352. Consists of a series of 40 housing cells, three cloisters, and a church, the site features Gothic architecture and decorated mausoleum Pope Innocent VI is buried.

Place Meissonier-This church houses a statue of the Virgin Mary composed of ivory. The museum dates back to the 14th century.

Rue Joseph-Vernet-This natural history museum is not only the largest, but also offers an exceptional exhibit of educational displays collected by naturalist and Avignon-native Esprit Requien.
