A bare hamlet on the fringes of Rajagriha was host to Buddha and Mahavira. However, few centuries later the naive locale turned to be one of the world famous learning centers. The name Nalanda meerged from a serpent ‘naga’ who lived in a tank near Rajagriha. However, the Naga was injured while excavating the foundation of a monastery.
