204 kilometers west of Srinagar and 234 km to the east of Leh at a height of 2704 lies the historic city of Kargil. The second largest city of Kargil is the headquarters of the district of the same name. In the Pan Asian trade network, Kargil was an important center for trade and transit. Regular convoys from China, Yarkand, Tibet and Kashmir routinely passed thru Kargil. The convoys used to carry some beautiful goods of silk, carpets, tea, ivory, brocade, etc. Travelers traveling between Leh and Srinagar halt at Kargil.

The majestic Himalayan flanks the city. For it being in a strategic location, Kargil offers ample opportunities for adventure activities. The Wakha and Drass streams of Suru river meet here that provide enough water for cultivation of wheat, barley, peas and many other cereals and vegetables. However, Kargil is famous for apricots. With the ripening of fruits, the tone of the valley transits from white to flaming orange.

Every year archery contest helds in the month of May, which is one of the famous attractions of the city. The city produces many items for shoppers including handicrafts, shawls and carpets. Among the many attractions of Kargil Buddhist monastery of Mulbek Gompa is important. Also worth making a visit are Trespone and Sankhoo imambaras.

Mulbek
On the road to Leh 45 km east of Kargil lies the Mulbek in the area dominated by Buddhists. Mulbek situates along the banks of the Wakha River. Many monuments mark the landscape of the region.

Mulbek Chamba
The principal draw of Mulbek is a 9-meter tall rock sculpture in profound respite of Maitreya, the Future Buddha. Its jaunt blends obscure Shaivite representation with early Buddhist art. Mulbek Chamba dates back to the time when Buddhists missionaries came traveling east of the Himalayas.

How to get there

The J&K SRTC runs routine buses including luxurious coaches between Srinagar and Leh/Kargil. Cars and taxis are available at Srinagar and Leh for Kargil. Local buses including mini coaches, for Mulbek leaves Kargil every morning and afternoon. Srinagar is also well linked with rest of the country through Air and Road network.
