The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is a paradise for nature lovers. Also known as Thekkady Wildlife Sanctuary, this sanctuary is one of the best places to watch animals in their natural habitats and so attracts multitude of tourists and nature lovers every year from several parts of the country. There is a scenic lake at the heart of the sanctuary which serves as the reservoir of water for the local wildlife. Periyar sanctuary is located 137 km from Madurai and spreads over 777 Sq.Km of the Cardamom Hills of Western Ghats. The variety of species include elephant, tiger, sambhar, gaur, spotted deer, mongoose, bison and over 260 species of birds including Nilgiri wood pigeons, blue-winged parakeets, flycatchers and many more. Wild Elephant herds come to the lake to frolic in the water.
Pullumedu (43 km from Thekkady, 26 km from Periyar)
Special permission to visit Pullumedu has to be obtained from the Wildlife Preservation Officer, Thekkady. A journey to this town along the Periyar River, offers a dazzling view of the undulating hills wrapped in lush greenery. You will find rare flora and fauna over there. The famous Sree Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala and the Makara Joythi illuminations at the shrine are visible from here.

Munnar
