IndiGo Airlines, well positioned low-cost private airline, modeled its business on providing highly efficient low-fare travel to the domestic passengers. The brainchild of Rakesh Gangwal and Rahul Bhatia, Indigo Airlines has recently gone international after completing five years of domestic operations and getting the license to operate on the international routes, as mandated by the civil aviation regulations in India. The parent company of the IndiGo Airlines, InterGlobe Enterprises, has its headquarter in Gurgaon, Haryana with IGI airport in Delhi as its operational hub. With focus on the domestic sector, the airlines started off in August 2006 with the first flight of A320-200 taking off connecting New Delhi and Imphal via Guwahati. As of November 2011, it serves 26 Indian and 5 international cities with 272 daily flights. During the course of its history, it has won numerous awards including the prestigious Skytrack Best Low Cost Airline Awards 2010 in Central Asia.

Vistara, owned by Tata Sons Limited, is a full-fledged airline based in India. It is the first carrier that introduced the concept of Premium Class in the country. The name Vistara comes from the Sanskrit word – Vistaar – meaning expansion, which fits well within the objective of the carrier. The carrier operates under the company formed as a result of the joint venture between Tata Sons Ltd. and Singapore Airlines (SIA). The former and the latter own 51 and 49 per cent shares in the company, respectively. This airline received the Air Operator Permit (AOP) on December 15, 2014 and started operations on January 9, 2015. Its first flight from Delhi to Mumbai was inaugurated by the Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Mahesh Sharma. The VIP guests and 160 passengers were carried in an Airbus A320 aircraft from Delhi to Mumbai. The airline shares codes with SilkAir and SIA and as of January 2015, it serves four destinations of the country by operating 14 flights with three Airbus 320s.

Headquartered in Gurgaon with operational hubs at IGI Airport in New Delhi and Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Hyderabad, SpiceJet Airlines began operations in May 2005 after the air-operating certificate (AOC) of the erstwhile Modiluft (later renamed as Royal Airlines) got new owners and SpiceJet booking facility was opened. SpiceJet India began operations as a low cost domestic carrier and its first flight was from Delhi to Mumbai via Ahmedabad. Building upon its promotional offer of abysmally low fares in the beginning, Spice Jet Airways set out on the market capturing drive and by 2008, it emerged as the second largest low cost carrier in the country in terms of market share. In 2007, Skytrax rated it as the best low cost airline in South and Central Asia. Spice Jet Airlines is famed for its operational efficiencies and marketing acumen aimed at attracting and retaining budget travelers with its highly successful advertisement campaigns. Its logo "Flying for everyone" sums up its corporate philosophy. The increasing sale of the Spice air tickets has led to a soaring revenue graph of the airline since 2006 with revenues increasing from $86.1 mn in 2006 to $562.51 mn in 2011.

India's oldest carrier, Air India has a worldwide network of passenger and cargo service. India?s national flag carrier, Air India is one of the two state owned airlines operating flights through 95 destinations around the world. Considered the father of air travel in India, Air India endows state of the art service to its guests. Headquartered in Mumbai, the airline has bases in New Delhi and Chennai. AirAsia India is a part of the Malaysia-based global low-cost operator AirAsia, which came into existence in 1994 and started operating in 1996. After the Government of India raised the bar for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) up to 49%, AirAsia approached Indian Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) in February 2013, seeking approval to start its operations in the country. Meanwhile, it made an announcement that it would partner with Telestra Tradeplace and Tata Sons to run its business in India. Its initial plan was to serve only Tier II and Tier III cities from its primary hub – Chennai International Airport; however, later it announced that it will cater to Tier I cities as well. It commenced its operations in India on June 12, 2014. This carrier justifies its slogan – Now, Everyone can Fly – by offering seats at reasonable fares. It has set many new standards in the industry since its inception, and operation at the lowest unit cost of INR 1.25 per seat kilometre is its best one. The onset of AirAsia India technically marked the return of the Tata Group in the aviation industry that owns 30 per cent shares in the company AirAsia (India) Private Limited, which manages AirAsia India. Telestra Tradeplace Private Limited and AirAsia India Investment Limited own 21 and 49 per cent shares of the company, respectively. As of January 2015, this company serves 7 destinations across the country.

Air Costa – an Indian regional airline based in Vijaywada – is an aviation foray of the LEPL Group. In September 2013, it was issued the Air Operator Permit (AOP) by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and in October 2013, it commenced operations with two Embraer E-170 aircraft. The carrier has its primary operations and maintenance hub at Chennai International Airport, Chennai and a secondary hub at Vijaywada Airport, Vijaywada. With a Customer First Attitude, this airline makes special efforts to deliver excellence in every aspect of flying. Its main focus is on increasing connectivity between Tier II and Tier III cities. In October 2013, Ramesh Lingamaneni – the chairman of the LEPL Group – had announced a plan to invest around $100 million in the airline. As of January 2015, this regional carrier serves 9 Indian destinations, most of them being in the southern part of the country.

Jet Airways, which commenced operations on May 5, 1993 has, within a short span of 14 years, established its position as a market leader. The airline has had the distinction of being repeatedly adjudged India's 'Best Domestic Airline' and has won several national and international awards. Under the guidance of its Chairman, Mr. Naresh Goyal, Jet Airways won the ?Best Domestic Airline? award for the fourth consecutive year and the fifth time in the past six years at the 18th annual TTG Travel Awards 2007. Jet Airways has also been voted the Best Airline in Central/South Asia and India in an annual Global Traveler magazine survey in January 2008. Jetlite is the new name of the former Air Sahara which was bought by Jet Airways in 2007 and made into its wholly owned subsidiary. Making a beginning in 1991 as Sahara Airlines, two Boeing 737-200 aircraft were bought in 1993 paving the way for the first Jet lite flight. The brand name of Sahara Airlines changed to Air Sahara in 2000, though the registered name still remained as Sahara Airlines. After five years of operating the domestic fights and on obtaining the permission to fly international flights, the first overseas flight was operated from Chennai to Colombo only to be discontinued later. Jetlite Airlines now flies only to Kathmandu outside India. Based in Mumbai, it has offices in five other Indian cities: Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Chennai. Jetlite Airlines is well positioned in the domestic market as a value-based service provider of airline tickets. In fact, it is the only low-cost, value-based domestic carrier which offers a frequent flyer program in partnership with Jetlite Privilege offering extra miles to the passengers who prefer to do Jetlite booking to fly with it. It also provides concessional air tickets for students, senior citizens, cancer patients, blind guests, armed forces personnel, people with locomotors disability, the youth and the seamen. Jet lite has its operational hub at the IGI airport in New Delhi with secondary hubs in Kolkata and Mumbai. It also provides choppers on charter basis. Choppers fitted with suitable imaging equipment are also used for aerial photography purposes.

TruJet is the branding, under which Turbo Megha Airways operates its flights. It is a regional air service provider, headquartered in Hyderabad. Operating from its hub at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, it offers services to numerous cities in South India. The Ministry of Civil Aviation gave it the permission to operate flights on domestic sectors in July 2014. Then, 18 Tier-II cities in the southern part of India were picked as destinations by the carrier. It sought the approval of the Indian government to buy ATR aircraft in December 2014. On July 7th, 2015, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) gave it a Regional Airline Permit. It obtained the propeller aircraft and started operations on July 12th, the same year. TruJet currently possesses a fleet of three ATR 72-500 aircraft that have a seating capacity of 72, each.
