Its first flight from Delhi to Mumbai was inaugurated by the Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Mahesh Sharma. The VIP guests and 160 passengers were carried in an Airbus A320 aircraft from Delhi to Mumbai. The airline shares codes with SilkAir and SIA and as of January 2015, it serves four destinations of the country by operating 14 flights with three Airbus 320s.
Air Costa – an Indian regional airline based in Vijaywada – is an aviation foray of the LEPL Group. In September 2013, it was issued the Air Operator Permit (AOP) by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and in October 2013, it commenced operations with two Embraer E-170 aircraft. The carrier has its primary operations and maintenance hub at Chennai International Airport, Chennai and a secondary hub at Vijaywada Airport, Vijaywada. With a Customer First Attitude, this airline makes special efforts to deliver excellence in every aspect of flying. Its main focus is on increasing connectivity between Tier II and Tier III cities. In October 2013, Ramesh Lingamaneni – the chairman of the LEPL Group – had announced a plan to invest around $100 million in the airline. As of January 2015, this regional carrier serves 9 Indian destinations, most of them being in the southern part of the country.
TruJet is the branding, under which Turbo Megha Airways operates its flights. It is a regional air service provider, headquartered in Hyderabad. Operating from its hub at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, it offers services to numerous cities in South India. The Ministry of Civil Aviation gave it the permission to operate flights on domestic sectors in July 2014. Then, 18 Tier-II cities in the southern part of India were picked as destinations by the carrier. It sought the approval of the Indian government to buy ATR aircraft in December 2014. On July 7th, 2015, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) gave it a Regional Airline Permit. It obtained the propeller aircraft and started operations on July 12th, the same year. TruJet currently possesses a fleet of three ATR 72-500 aircraft that have a seating capacity of 72, each.
AirAsia India is a part of the Malaysia-based global low-cost operator AirAsia, which came into existence in 1994 and started operating in 1996. After the Government of India raised the bar for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) up to 49%, AirAsia approached Indian Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) in February 2013, seeking approval to start its operations in the country. Meanwhile, it made an announcement that it would partner with Telestra Tradeplace and Tata Sons to run its business in India. Its initial plan was to serve only Tier II and Tier III cities from its primary hub – Chennai International Airport; however, later it announced that it will cater to Tier I cities as well. It commenced its operations in India on June 12, 2014. This carrier justifies its slogan – Now, Everyone can Fly – by offering seats at reasonable fares. It has set many new standards in the industry since its inception, and operation at the lowest unit cost of INR 1.25 per seat kilometre is its best one. The onset of AirAsia India technically marked the return of the Tata Group in the aviation industry that owns 30 per cent shares in the company AirAsia (India) Private Limited, which manages AirAsia India. Telestra Tradeplace Private Limited and AirAsia India Investment Limited own 21 and 49 per cent shares of the company, respectively. As of January 2015, this company serves 7 destinations across the country.
