Mahayogi Gorakhnath Airport, situated on NH 28 (Lucknow-Barauni National Highway), serves the city of Gorakhpur and is approximately 8 km east of the city center. Gorakhpur airport is operated as a civil enclave at the Gorakhpur Air Force station of the Indian Air Force (IAF). It is owned by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), and administered jointly by the AAI and the IAF. Gorakhpur airport was renamed as Mahayogi Gorakhnath Airport recently.

The airport, which is a part of an IAF military base, is in the process of expansion. Recently in June 2017, the first phase of a new passenger terminal was inaugurated. The single terminal is for both arrivals and departures and can cater to around 100 passengers at a time. The airport has 1 runway, which is 9000 ft long and is also used by the Air Force for operating military aircraft. It is a domestic airport and has airlines like Air India, Alliance Air, and Spice Jet operating domestic flights to New Delhi and Kolkata.

There is a proposal to include international flights in the airport’s itinerary, starting with flights to the neighboring nation of Nepal.
