About Patiala

Patiala is a city in the south-east of Punjab. Once a princely state, this city is home to a number of opulent palaces such as the Moti Bagh Palace, the Quila Androon, the Rang Mahal and the Sheesh Mahal.

Patiala came under the British regime for protection in 1809, during the rule of Maharaja Sahib Singh, who reigned from 1773 to 1813. It was under British protection from 1809 to 1947. The appeal for Patiala Princely State was rejected by the Indian Government in 1948.

Perhaps the city is most famous for the standard measure of alcohol that has come to bear its name - the Patiala peg.

Baradari Garden (1.5 km): A 19th century Mughal style garden; its name literally translates to garden with twelve doors.
Kali Temple (2 km): An ancient temple dedicated to the goddess Kali, it was built by the Maharaja of Patiala in 1936 and is located in the heart of the city.
Omaxe Mall (2 km): The largest shopping complex in Patiala, it has various brand outlets, big retail shops, multiplexes and a food court that serves the best multi cuisine dishes.
Qila Mubarak Complex (3.8 km): A prime example of Sikh architecture, it houses an entire collection of different types of mirrors in the Darbar Hall.
Thapar University (2.4 km): Founded by Karam Chand Thapar in 1956, it is one of the leading educational institutions for engineering in the country.
Gurdwara Dukh Nivaran Sahib (1.2 km): A holy shrine for followers of Sikhism, devotees from all over the world come here for a holy dip during Basant Panchami.
Moti Bagh Palace (4.5 km): The former residence of the Patiala royal household, it was one of the largest living areas in the world.
Sheesh Mahal (4.7 km): Built in 1847 by Maharaja Narinder Singh, it is known as the Palace of Mirrors because of its colored glass decoration.
National Institute of Sports (4.8 km): Known as one of Asia’s biggest Sports Institutes, it was built, developed and maintained by the erstwhile Maharaja of Patiala and his family.

Connectivity

The nearest international airport is the Chandigarh Airport, which is only 65 km away, while the nearest domestic airport is the Ludhiana Airport, which is 84 km away. Patiala has its own railway station that connects it to the major stations around India.
Both public and private sector buses run inside the city as well as to major points nearby. Patiala is a city that is very easily connected to the rest of the country.
