About Patiala

Patiala is a city in the south-east of Punjab. Once a princely state, this city is home to a number of opulent palaces such as the Moti Bagh Palace, the Quila Androon, the Rang Mahal and the Sheesh Mahal.

Patiala came under the British regime for protection in 1809, during the rule of Maharaja Sahib Singh, who reigned from 1773 to 1813. It was under British protection from 1809 to 1947. The appeal for Patiala Princely State was rejected by the Indian Government in 1948.

Perhaps the city is most famous for the standard measure of alcohol that has come to bear its name - the Patiala peg.
