History Andaman and Nicobar Islands, located in the expansive India Ocean, is a union territory in India. It is a group of over 570 islands, out of which 38 are inhabited permanently. You cannot restrain yourself from the unparalleled charm of this place, often referred as the emerald paradise. Traces of the history suggest that Marco Polo was among the first travellers from the far west to witness its jaw-dropping beauty. Later, in the 18th century, a Maratha admiral – Kanhoji Angre – made it his strategic base to fight a battle against the British and Portuguese naval forces. However, he was defeated, and the former established their colony in the year 1789. Later, they abandoned it for a while and regained the control over this group of islands in the 19th century, only to use it as an isolated prison. Now this group of islands has emerged as a popular tourist destination, and houses many hotels to cater to the needs of increasing tourists.
