History
National Capital Territory of Delhi, the Capital Territory of India, is believed to be occupied before the second millennium BC. The various scriptures, inscriptions and artefacts found in the region confirm its continuous inhabitation since the 6th century BC. The earliest architectural relics found in the city date back to 300 B.C., belonging to the Maurya period. The year 1526 marked the beginning of the renowned Mughal era, which ended in 1757 with the invasion of the Afghan ruler, Ahmad Shah Durrani. The year 1857, saw the advent of British colonial rule and in 1927, the state was renamed as New Delhi. It became the capital of India after the country gained independence in 1947. The region witnessed the rule of many dynasties and government, the marks of which can be seen in the form of a large number of edifices around the city.

Attractions
The cultural diversity of the state is visible in its architectural marvels, such as historical monuments and revered shrines. While there is a Sacred Heart Cathedral Church in the heart of the city, there is also Gurudwara Bangla Sahib right across the street to it. Also, the city has several widely known attractions, including the Lotus Temple, Qutub Minar, Akshardham Temple and Dilli Haat. Impressions of the Mughal empire can be seen around the city in its monuments like Humayun Tomb, Red Fort, Old Fort and Lodhi Tomb. Built in 1910 for the British Viceroy, Rashtrapati Bhawan literally translates to 'Presidential Residence' and is must see when visiting the lush gardens of India Gate.
