Vembanad house is a renovated 100-yr old house converted into a home-stay. The building is in a large property by the side of the backwaters and one can just spend hours lying on the hammock enjoying the view of the Vembanad lake with the numerous fishing canoes. Sandhya, our host, plus the other staff were very welcoming. The food (breakfast and dinner) tasted home made and the quality was faultless. It has large bedrooms with attached verandas, from where one can enjoy the sunrise. The stay was so enjoyable that we hardly went outside the property. Can't wait to go back and relive the experience.

We have just spent an incredible few days at Vembenad House during a two week holiday from Cochin to Trivandrum. Our trip was faultless and we left feeling very relaxed and at ease. A few specific pros: 1) Rooms very comfortable and extremely clean 2) The rooms have a lovely outside seating area to relax and look over the garden and lake, we played chess out here (which is available in the communal area) 3) The food is plentiful and unbelievably brilliant - the best we have had during our stay. We had breakfast included, and dinner is very reasonably priced. 4) The hosts are brilliant, it is entirely family run and has been with the family for generations, which you can tell in the love for everything from recommending What to do, to cleanliness of the rooms, to the beautiful gardens 3) The location is unbelievable. We had left one night between locations to stay on a houseboat but decided to move down to Kollam straight away as nothing could beat the lake experience we had 4) HOT WATER!!! This sounds weird, but you struggle to even get hot water at 5 star resorts in Kerala so this was a MASSIVE luxury 5) Sunrise. We got up early as the house is positioned in the perfect location to watch the sun rise over Vembenad Lake (and when the local fisherman go out) a definite photo opp Outside of the resort we went to: Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary which was brilliant - we didn't see many birds but did see snakes, loads of moniter lizards, and turtles. A man about half way down the first path offered us a ride in his canoe for 400 rupees for an hour which really made the trip for us - he pointed out many birds and also an enormous bat (no idea what breed) Tour of Allepey - we went to a Hindu temple and spent a while here learning about the religion which was very interesting, we also went to the lighthouse, allepey beach, a private museum, boat tour, and handicraft shops which was a good day out.

This homestay is in an enviable position right on Lake Vembanad, and I could have spent hours simply enjoying the view, watching the bird life and admiring the hard work of the local fishermen. But there's more to staying here than just the view, with comfortable accommodation, a welcoming host and absolutely excellent food. From here we were able to take a boat trip on the backwaters (which the owner helped organise), and on another day we took the local ferry across to the opposite shore of the lake, which was fun and allowed us to visit one of the local bird sanctuaries. Overall this was a very successful stay for us, and we thought it was probably better than staying in Alleppey itself, which is a 10-15 minute drive away.

The Vembanad House offers a great view with a lovely garden with direct access to the lake. The B&B is located in a very charming house 100 years old in the typical Kerala style. Both breakfast and dinner served at the Vembanad house are delicious. Our hosts at the B&B were very kind and helpful.

We really liked staying at Vembanad House - even though the extra bed (we slept three in a room) was a fairly hard mattress on the floor. But the real bed was nice :-) Food was really good, and the couple, who own the place were nice and friendly and left us more or less alone to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Met a huge spider in the bathroom, which I captured and put outside as my friends wouldn't touch it. "It is only mildly poisonous, no problem", our landlady said, when we told her :-) Glad I didn't know ahead of time. As we were coming to the end of the high season, we were the only guests that night, so we had the whole house to ourselves - what a luxury! The view is breathtaking by the way.
