Bandhavgarh, meaning Brother's Fort, is located in the Umaria District towards the north-eastern border of Madhya Pradesh. Famous for different varieties of flora and fauna, the city comprises 32 hills and is wrapped by green terrains.
Rich wildlife and compassionate ecotourism strategies are the essence of Bandhavgarh. The Bandhavgarh National Park, sprawling over an area of 105 sq km, is popular for having the highest density of Bengal tigers in the world. Tigers as well as a number of other animal and bird species in this park attract several tourists, especially wildlife enthusiasts. At this park, they can spot animals like Four-horned Antelope, Panther, Slot Bear and Hyena. Rare bird species like White-rumped Vulture, Golden Oriole and Hoopoe are also likely to be seen.
The other prominent attraction contributing towards Bandhavgarh tourism is the Bandhavgarh Fort. Although its history is not clearly known, mythological significance is associated with the fort. It is said that Lord Rama stayed in Bandhavgarh after defeating Ravana. He built this fort here and gifted it to his brother Lakshmana, who is also known as 'Bandhavadhish'. The Bandhavgarh Fort is over 800 metres tall and provides a beautiful view of the city.
The best time to visit Bandhavgarh is between the months of December and February. During this time, nearby tourist places like Kanha, Khajuraho, Bhedaghat and Jabalpur also enjoy pleasant weather conditions. However, if the objective of Bandhavgarh tour is tiger photography, then summers are the best time as the hot climate compels tigers to roam near water resources.
