The Mahabharata describes Bhimtal as a place visited by Bhima while Pandavas were banished from their territory. Thus, the town is named after Bhima, the Pandava blessed with immense physical power. Bhimtal is located at an elevation of 1370 m above the sea level and is popular as a beautiful tourist destination. Since there are various places to visit in Bhimtal, tourists do not get bored while enjoying vacations in this town.
One of the most important places to explore while enjoying Bhimtal sightseeing is the Bhimtal Lake. The lake has an island in the centre and the Bhimeshwara Mahadev Temple on its bank. Every day, hundreds of people visit this temple to pay obeisance to the presiding deities and perform rituals. While in Bhimtal, travellers can also pay a visit the Nal Damyanti Tal, which is just 2 km away. Apart from the above mentioned places, they can explore the Gargi River, which is a great place for soak up wonderful views.
