If you have a heart, I challenge you to not fall in love with this place. Its not a hotel, its not a resort. Its was a home away from my own, where I came to stay for a week. Amith, corresponded with us initially to confirm our bookings and airport transfers. He answered all our questions and concerns. The food is cooked with love by Achu, and is pure soul food. Minnie, looked after our every need through the day and was replaced by Maithre in the late afternoon, equally adept in her mothering. Mohammad, opens all the windows and doors to the entire place in the early mornings and then closes them again at night, he brought us out refreshments before our 7am Yoga classes and can be seen throughout the day working around the gardens. Always wearing a smile and a greeting. A number of other staff, whom I didnt get to know personally, were always welcoming and helpful. Dr xx and his Wife, who own and run Harivihar, both visited us at different times in the day. They both have what I would like call Genuine South Indian Hospitality : Concern and Care for their guests stay and comfort. Our Yoga, Meditation and Philosophy discourse was taken by an amazingly gentle person, Gopalakrishnan. His patience in teaching Yoga was tremendous. Most of all, I enjoyed sharing breakfast with him after our Yoga classes, when we talked about religion, life and such. Want 24 hour room service? Want a swimming pool with a slide? Want sound proofed Hotel rooms? Dont come here. Want peace? Want a serene and calm environment? Want to immerse yourself in southern indian culture? Want Genuine home-styled hospitality? Book at HariVihar. You wont be disappointed. As I said in the start, I challenge you not to fall in love with this place.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Harivihar Homestay last week. Everyone was so welcoming and attentive and the house and gardens were absolutely beautiful. We had two unforgettable beginners yoga sessions with our teenagers at the homestay too. A very special place.

Where to start !? We entered the property and were ushered into an entrance hall with the smell of incense and were immediately emblazoned with the Bindi ( a sign of respect ) . The staff took our bags and our 8 days of royalty began! Not one moment passed when we were not special , nor where we EVER an annoyance . We were Sir and Madam the whole time and were treated accordingly ! ( that takes some getting used to!) . The staff and management work amazingly together as a team , there is no boss or leader, it was teamwork and very impressive. They were very comfortable as a team and that showed in their service to us, as guests and also as friends. The food was amazing -freshly cooked every meal. The massage treatment blew me away, at one point I was literally almost tripping and the Ayurvedic doctor that we met was , how to put into words ??, when someone feels your pulse and tells you all about yourself ! If you need a life fix come here! If you need a break , come here! If you want to be treated like a king and queen , come here ! If you want to just relax and feel special, come here! For activities we found the local beach very friendly and Sm Street is fantastic for shopping ( grand bazaar ) !

We came to Harivihar for a week of cleansing and relaxation and we certainly achieved that. We had an Ayurvedic treatment everyday, as well as cleansing medicines that had been personally prescribed to us by the doctors there. The team who administered our massages and treatments were fantastic. They created such a tranquil atmosphere and were clearly skilled professionals. We had yoga every morning at 7am with a wonderful yoga guru who taught us a lot both physically and spiritually. After breakfast, before our Ayurvedic treatments, we enjoyed dipping our feet and having a fish pedicure in the traditional bathing pond - we even had a swim a couple of times. All the staff at the Harivihar were wonderful and treated us like royalty from the moment we arrived. I was encouraged to try a sari a couple of times and we learnt a lot about Indian culture from the team there. The food was some of the best that we ate on our 3 week stay in India and we ate Indian style with our hands everyday. (Knives and forks were provided - we just chose to eat the authentic way!) It was a cheap and easy tuk tuk ride into town and to the city beach, which we did on a number of occasions. We really loved our time at Harivihar and would recommend anyone on a budget, looking for the Ayurveda/Yoga experience to consider staying here.

Harivihar is a gem in a charming neighbourhood of Calicut. Make no mistakes, it is a homestay facility. Don't expect room service, pillow mints, 24-hour coffee shop and the other things that you would take for granted in a hotel or a resort. Harivihar is elegantly restored in a minimalistic style. The owners and staff maintain it impeccably and ensure your every need is taken care of like guests in their own home. There is a lot of warmth and attention to detail. However, if you or your travel companions have restricted mobility, please be sure to ask for ground floor accommodation. The staircase are rather steep. One suggestion to the management - even considering that the food served is vegetarian, it could do with some improvement. Everything else is perfect!
