Coorg (Kodagu) and Chikamagalur are hot destinations for coffee retreats. FlameBack is a coffee plantation/resort set in a fabulous natural setting. Its a beautiful concept by the Maharaja of Sandur (Ghorpades, a Maratha kingdom situated near Hampi). Unlike other resorts, despite the plantation being on a huge plot, it houses only 8 cottages/rooms. The villas are designed to help you soak in nature from all sides. The in-house Alsatians are friendly & adorable. We took our dog who thoroughly enjoyed FlameBack Resort. Its a very peaceful setting with a large private lake on the property. We thoroughly enjoyed Kayaking in the beautiful lake surrounded by coffee plantation on one side and lake-facing villas on the other. Though most FlameBack employees are locals, they are well-trained and courteous. In fact most dont say No to any request! I must compliment the management on great service. Food was good with emphasis on local cuisine. We loved various types of local breads e.g. Akki Roti (a Malnad speciality made from rice), Idiyappam or String Hoppers, Neer Dosa and of course soft chapatis. Local curries like Pandhi Curry, a Coorgi delight, was offered. Freshwater fish from nearby areas was offered too. Ask for Lemon Pudding, a FlameBack specialty, With unlimited beer being part of the package, one can soak in the beautiful nature with a chilled glass of beer!! Nothing can be better... The open & airy dining hall overlooks the paddy fields. Most furniture is made of solid wood which is rare to see nowadays. The pool & spa are nice and elegant. Tips: Choose Paddy Villa especially no. 1 & 2 which have a fabulous view of lush rice fields. Go for walks along the lake; crossover the small wooden bridge and walk through the coffee plantation with a clear view of lake all through. Overall, FlameBack is a great fabulous retreat, 250 km from Bangalore. Go there for a memorable relaxing holiday.

We were at the flameback lodges for a special occasion for a friend. Enjoyed the stay, food and hospitality. The stay at the property is a good weekend getaway and worth the price. PS: Maybe the pillows could be a little better.

This was our 2nd visit to the property and we enjoyed it as much as or even more than the earlier visit. Superb villa designs, so much greenery, fog in the morning with dew falling from the leaves....Fabulous. Excellent food and superb service. Can go on and on...

An amazing place with very good accommodations. Its beautiful and elegant. Definitely not a budget hotel. However, if you are looking for a very calm, Malnad atmosphere this place is for you. They have very limited numbers of rooms. All are well located. They do have a lake-view, which is an added flavour.

My wife and I spent a 3 day weekend at Flameback with another couple. The signs off the main road are a little obscure, but just as we were thinking we should go back and ask for directions, we saw a flameback take wing off the bush in front of us and we knew we had arrived. The welcome on arrival was exuberant! Apart from Krishnan who the main staff available 24x7 at the lodge, Jaws (also known as Caesar), Sharkie and Ruby, 3 magnificent German Shepherds, made us feel right at home from the word go. The villas are spacious and well equipped, with a stocked mini bar and ample toiletries and coffee/tea. The sit out patios are large and each villa built in complete privacy so that you are able to sleep with the curtains drawn and nature completely visible through the large French windows as you lie in bed. Meals are at the main building in a delightful large open air lounge with dining tables and large comfortable sofas to lounge in. Bharat, the person in charge puts out chilled beer in the afternoons and liquor in the evenings on the house and evenings are really cheerful with all the guests mingling around exchanging stories and letting their hair down. There's ample to do for a long weekend. There is a little lake on the grounds where you can kayak, a small swimming pool, a pool table, carroms, and loads of books and magazines. There is a 1000 year old temple with a view point about 14 km away where the staff will accompany you to. Apart from that you can go for a walk around the coffee plantation as well. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Whatever you want to eat or drink is available 24x7 on demand. Umbrellas along with every room is a thoughtful extra in a place like Chikmagalur. Meals are buffet spreads with wide variety. Overall and extremely good experience. Very well run, neat and spacious, the staff caters to your every need, and the pets make you feel like family. The only area of improvement I would call out is the food, which though homely, is short of extraordinary, which everything else at flameback is
