I had a really mixed to bad experience at 36 Palms. I found it while searching for a yoga retreat in Kerala, and inquired about the yoga and Ayurvedic package. They definitely advertise themselves as a yoga retreat, but they are very, very far from that. So if you're looking for a yoga retreat, don't go here. There were a few pros though to our experience, so it could meet your needs depending on what you're looking for: Pros: This place is essentially a nice ocean-side hotel with nice rooms. There is no beach to swim at there though, you have to take a rickshaw down to the main Cherrai beach. It has a decent restaurant (although not Ayurvedic at all), and nice staff who work in the restaurant. It has a pretty lounge area and infinity pool. Cons: Other than that the actual space being nice, much of it seemed to be under constructed (painting, supplies around, etc.), which was weird, and it is completely disorganized! Like nothing else I've ever experienced to be honest, and not at all my experience in India. No one seems to be in charge or care to be charge, the people that claim to be somewhat in charge knew nothing about what we booked and the "yoga package". As far as the yoga and Ayurvedic package went, you will get very basic, sub par yoga if you can find pin the teacher town. It was not customized at all based on our level or interest and was far and away the worst yoga I did throughout India. The teacher is hard to hunt down and schedule with and it's all just very confusing. You have your own class with who you arrive with, but the timing is based around when guests already there have already booked it. And unless you think the advice of "avoid fried foods and eat vegetables" is helpful, you won't get any Ayurvedic tips either. It was so bizarre that we even bothered meeting with the Ayurvedic woman. As part of our package, we also paid for an Ayurvedic massage for each day, but immediately we were pushed to get more expensive massages and pay the difference. It really made us feel like WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THE PACKAGE WE BOUGHT? It included vegetarian food, but there's little of that offered on the menu, so you sort of really just have a food stipend and they tally up everything and at the end you pay the difference. It was such a bizarre approach to offering a package, and we wish we had not gotten one. So in short, if you are looking for yoga or Ayurveda DEFINITELY go elsewhere, this place should not be allowed to advertise themselves as a retreat because it couldn't be further from that. It is utterly and completely disorganized and you sort of feel duped the entire time and like you might be in a bizarro world of a hotel. If you're just looking for a place to park yourself in a nice room with a nice view, then it could meet your needs.

After a busy tour of Kerala we decided to have a 36 hour relaxing break before leaving India. This turned out to be the perfect spot. Looking out over the ocean from your very comfortable room and balcony. The food was excellent and we were very well looked after. Would definitely visit again.

Stayed for a most relaxing week at the idyllic 36 Palms. The days started with some holistic Yoga with the sound of the sea rolling up the beach and birds tweeting in the palm, then maybe a swim in the infinity pool or watching dolphins and eagles play. A daily massage or treatment in the afternoon are to die for and thoroughly recommended. The restaurant serves delicious food morning, noon and night in a beautiful setting. The retreat was fully booked but it never felt crowded, far from it. Nothing was ever a problem, whatever the request. The charismatic and entertaining Boss man and his delightful music loving nephew showed the Indian hospitality has no bounds and Ive left with very fond memories. If youre ever in London, be sure to look me up. Ciao x

Peaceful boutique retreat right next to the beach. Lovely infinity pool overlooking the ocean, spacious sun deck to relax on, well appointed rooms and great restaurant serving local dishes. I stayed for a month for a complete wind down, rest and relaxation and took full advantage of the marvellous Ayurvedic treatments and the daily yoga sessions, given by the inspirational Briji. I think this boutique retreat has something for everyone ... a place to wind down after a hectic tour, a romantic destination for couples, a family get away or a place for a group of friends to come & take advantage of the Yoga & Ayurvedic programmes/treatments that are available. I will certainly be going back.

We enjoyed our stay at the 36palms Hotel so much. The sea-view room was perfect, the food was delicous and the staff was so friendly. You could even watch the dolphins from the terrace. Beside that we had a very relaxing Yoga-Class and fantastic ayurvedic massages. Thanks to the whole staff - it was fantastic.
