Malabar House is super stylish and in a great location. However, for a Relais & Chateaux property it was very disappointing. Our room, a suite, was tiny. The mattress was the hardest we have ever experienced in any hotel. It felt like sleeping on the floor. Every time we took a shower, it flooded the bathroom. The wifi was horrible. As for the food, well, let's just say it didn't live up to Relais & Chateaux standards.

We had a beautiful room opening on to the courtyard with a seating area of our own and also a separate privare outdoor space at the back. It was so peaceful despite being quite central to old Kochin. The staff were very good and the food was amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and were sorry to leave.

We spent three nights at Malabar House at the end of our trip through southern India. Our room was just behind the reception next to the restaurant area but we didn't have any problem with noise. The reason I haven't given it four stars is because it was the most expensive place we stayed at during our trip but the facilities and service didn't really match up to other places we stayed in. For example, one afternoon we sat out in the courtyard after a swim and had to go to find someone in order to get a drink despite staff criss-crossing the courtyard.

Arrived at night, greeting was unexceptional as the front of house guy spent more time talking to the taxi driver than greeting us. Place looked a bit shabby in the dark. Shown to our room which was right next to reception, we said we were a bit unsure of the location but he assured us it was a great room due to the adjoining private courtyard ( see photo). There is no way anybody would use that shabby arrangement. Bed was tiny and only one bedside lamp so my husband had to sit up in a chair to read. Went to dinner, service was pretty patchy with a distinct lack of training evident. Food was very good which was lucky. I cant believe this place has a Relais Chateaux affiliation, it by no means met the standard of the other Relais we have stayed at in India. They also neglected to inform us of an arranged tour included in our package so we missed it. Not worth the price and really needs to lift its game.

We had a great two-night stay at Malabar house. The service from staff was excellent. We got a complimentary room upgrade for honeymoon trip which was a delightful surprise. The artwork in common areas and the rooms sets it apart--it's definitely not the typical bland artwork. The architecture is nice with high ceilings that keep room cool even if you turn off the air conditioning. It sounds silly, but the shower was especially nice after traveling elsewhere in India; the water pressure was high and temperature control worked well. The location is very walkable, and it's easy to get other transportation.
